Chennai Airport News Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), the Chennai (MAA) Airport shared a post late last night in which it mentioned that based on the meeting with IMD, Airlines, AAI and other stakeholders in view of the revised weather forecast and readiness of the operational area,

Cyclone Fengal, with wind speeds of 70-80 kmph and gusts reaching 90 kmph, is hitting the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. Operations at Chennai Airport are suspended, and flights and train services are disrupted.

Cyclone Fengal is set to make landfall in Tamil Nadu, bringing heavy rainfall and winds up to 90 km/h. The IMD has issued warnings for several districts, including Chennai, with disruptions expected in transport and flight operations.

With Cyclone Fengal nearing Tamil Nadu, Velachery residents in Chennai have parked vehicles on flyovers, fearing floods in low-lying areas. Fishing boats were anchored 50 meters from the shore at Srinivasapuram near Pattinapakkam due to the cyclonic depression.

Scenes of confusion unfolded at the airport as passengers faced lengthy delays, with many waiting for up to 12 hours before the situation stabilised.

Parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry experienced heavy rains due to the landfall process of cyclone Fengal. Senior officials in three southern states, including Andhra Pradesh assigned to supervise and coordinate related tasks with district authorities are stationed in their respective districts.

In the undated footage, an Airbus A320 Neo was seen aborting its landing shortly after touching down. The aircraft tilted briefly to the left before stabilising and ascending back into the clouds.

Due to adverse weather conditions amid Cyclone Fengal, Chennai airport had suspended its operations till 4 am on Sunday.

Cyclonic storm Fengal has commenced making landfall close to Puducherry and it may approximately take 4 hours for it to cross the coast completely.
