Last weekend, the Gamecocks won at Clemson — a ranked team — and moved up one spot in the CFP ranking. Alabama won over Auburn — a team that finished 5-7 — and was rewarded with a two-spot bump into the critical No. 11 position, the one that essentially would ensure a spot in the 12-team playoff.

Joel Klatt explained why the committee got it right ranking the Alabama Crimson Tide over the Miami Hurricanes, Ole Miss Rebels, and the South Carolina Gamecocks. He compared the Tide’s resume with all the other bubble teams.

Alabama, South Carolina, and Ole Miss are on the bubble, with Texas, Tennessee and Georgia likely three of the 12 teams. The highest-ranked three-loss SEC team that misses the CFP will likely play in the Citrus Bowl, with other SEC teams playing in the other eight bowls with conference affiliations.

No. 3 South Carolina has already faced four opponents that have made appearances in the AP Top 25 and has two more this week with No. 8 Duke and No. 9 TCU on the schedule
